Your garage door’s torsion springs are made of heavy steel and are under immense tension. When one breaks, it makes a deafening banging sound. Sometimes, a garage door with a broken spring can still be opened. When it opens, the broken ends of the spring will slip past one another and then slam together every time the winding mechanism makes another revolution. There are two main things you can do to help keep your garage door’s spring(s) intact:

• Insulate or otherwise keep your garage warm: Steel is incredibly strong, but it gets brittle in the cold. Most torsion spring breaks happen during the cold months. Keeping your garage warm by insulating it or even just keeping your door shut and all seals in good shape will reduce the chance of a broken spring.
